Tour Plan

9:00 AM – Pickup from Hotel

Your unforgettable Borneo tour starts with a comfortable hotel pickup from your accommodation in Kota Kinabalu. Your expert guide will greet you and provide a quick overview of the day’s tour. As you drive towards the Mari-Mari Cultural Village, enjoy scenic views of Borneo's lush rainforest and countryside. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about the island’s cultural diversity, preparing you for the immersive experience ahead.

Arrival at Mari-Mari Cultural Village

Upon arrival at Mari-Mari Cultural Village, you will be warmly greeted by the friendly villagers. Before you enter the village, your guide will brief you on the village's rules and provide valuable tips to ensure you engage respectfully with the local culture. You’ll then take part in a traditional Welcome Ceremony led by the Village Chief, a symbolic gesture to honor your visit to their home. Feel the vibrant energy of the village as you prepare for an enriching Borneo cultural adventure.

Cross the Iconic Suspension Bridge

The next highlight of your tour is crossing the iconic suspension bridge, one of the most famous landmarks of the Mari-Mari Cultural Village. As you walk across, take in the breathtaking views of the dense Bornean rainforest below. The bridge is not only a physical link to the village but also a metaphorical passage into Borneo's rich history. Your guide will explain the cultural significance of this unique structure, which connects the five different indigenous groups of the village: Dusun, Rungus, Murut, Bajau, and Lundayeh.

Explore Traditional Borneo Villages

As you enter the village, get ready to explore the recreated traditional homes of five indigenous ethnic groups. Each house is a living museum, carefully reconstructed to reflect the lifestyle, architecture, and beliefs of each group. The Dusun, Rungus, Murut, Bajau, and Lundayeh tribes have distinct traditions that are brought to life through these unique homes. You’ll have the opportunity to visit each house and learn about how each tribe adapts to Borneo’s diverse landscapes, from the highlands to the coastal regions.

Cultural Demonstrations and Traditional Crafts

Next, you’ll be treated to live cultural demonstrations showcasing ancient techniques that have been passed down through generations. Watch the villagers demonstrate how they start a fire using traditional methods, a skill that was vital for survival in the past. You’ll also see intricate weaving and crafting as the villagers create traditional garments and household items. These demonstrations offer a deep insight into the ancient skills that sustain the indigenous communities of Borneo.

Participate in Hands-On Activities

After the demonstrations, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and participate in some hands-on activities. Your guide will lead you through a series of interactive cultural workshops where you can try your hand at traditional Borneo games, craft-making, and cooking techniques. These activities are designed to give you a deeper understanding of Borneo’s indigenous ways of life and provide an opportunity to engage directly with the culture.

Traditional Bornean Lunch

After a morning filled with exploration and learning, it’s time to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch served at the heart of the village. The meal is prepared by the villagers using traditional cooking methods and local ingredients. Sample a range of authentic Bornean dishes, including rice, vegetables, fish, and meat, all cooked using time-honored techniques. This is a perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the flavors of Borneo while soaking in the surroundings.

Farewell Ceremony and Gift Giving

Before you leave, you will participate in a farewell ceremony with the villagers. This is a touching moment where you can express your gratitude for the hospitality and the enriching cultural experience you’ve had. The villagers will present you with a small gift as a token of appreciation. This gesture will remind you of the warm welcome and the deep cultural exchange you’ve experienced. Don’t forget to take some final photos to capture the memories of your time in Mari-Mari Cultural Village.

1:00 PM – Departure and Transfer Back to Hotel

After bidding farewell to the villagers, it’s time to head back to modern-day Kota Kinabalu. Wonderful smooth tour by Clare 👍🏼

I went with both my parents, and it was a very enjoyable experience! I visited 5 years ago, and there have been improvements from the reception area, to the increased number of staff and guides, and lunch provided as compared to last time 👍🏼 We got Clare as our guide, and she was very patient and kind despite certain people in the group that were a tad more mischievious throughout the tour. The tour was smooth, the post-tour performance was entertaining, and the lunch was delicious. All in all, I'm glad that MMCV has improved over the years and gave my parents as wonderful an experience as last time I went 😁👍🏼👍🏼..

Good learning experience

I am not going to fault anything here, it was an amazing experience. The guides were amazing ( our guide was Aril) and we felt really good taken care of. They are all knowledgeable and really want people to learn about the culture and the tribes of Borneo. The traffic can be horrible, it can rain, changes can happen to your trip, but none of this matters as long as the experience is great, and it really was 🙂 Thank you so much 🙂..

The best thing to do from Kota Kinabalu

We totally loved our afternoon here. Our guide was super friendly and explained everything very well. The tour is well thought through and we were not expecting to have food and drink little tasters throughout. We didnt really know what to expect and were impressed...

No value add

The tour itself was excellent. 5 stars to the experience, and our guide Zul was engaging. The transport there left much to be desired and was overpriced after i calculated how much the ticket price cost us. The driver was late in picking us up, saying he had to go to the carwash, and the main coordinator said no rush when we contacted him. There is no value add for this package - only overpriced private transfer and the driver going over to register for you at the venue. Book this only if its last minute and you cannot get your own transport...
